When I open a portrait image in the Develop module, it is stretched horizontally.
This has been happening off and on for a while now. It sometimes stops happening, but the sequence of steps that made it stop happening before now don't work.
I've tried to see if I can come up with a rule - It seems to be happening most frequently with images from one particular trip in 2''7. But, not all images from that trip have the problem.
I have made the problem go away variously by going into gallery, then loupe, and then develop - but that isn't working now.
I've also made it go away by performing SHOW IN EXPLORER, although that seems strange.
I've reloaded LR.
It doesn't seem to happen at all with images taken with my D3'', but it doesn't always happen with images taken with my old D7's.

Any ideas? I'm stumped!!

An update:
I selected a metadata filter with an aspect of portrait. From the filtered gallery display, if I go to Develop, there is no distortion.
BUT the filter missed a bunch of images that are portrait.
If I go to an unfiltered gallery, the portrait images that did not show up in the filtered view many/all are distorted when I go into Develop.

Does this suggest anything to anyone? Maybe I need to re-import these images?
But, if I do, will I loose any develop settings?

Another update:
I think I have a solution that works.....
I went to one folder that seemed to have problems with every portrait image.
I determined that all portrait images that hadn't been developed had distortion and were not selected by the PORTRAIT metadata filter.
So, I REMOVED them all from LR and synched the folder again.
Voila! No more problems with distortion. And, the filter found all of them.

And, even though I'd like to know what happened to create the problem in the first place,
I'm happy knowing I can solve it; and, besides, I'm going to upgrade to LR3 as soon as it's available anyway.

I doubt it, Nik. Develop doesn't use the previews.

Did this problem happen only with images that had been cropped opposite their orientation -- that is, shot landscape then cropped portrait, or vice versa? That might explain the filter behavior, though it wouldn't explain the Develop behavior.

I'd be slightly concerned about a corrupt catalog. I'd run a catalog verification to be safe.

All were portraits shot as portraits.
And, so far, the ones with the problems were all shot on one trip. I haven't found any other problems in any other folders.

I'm suspicious of metadata. I discovered that the aspect ration is stored in the metadata. So, is it possible that the meta data got out of synch?
I'm also thinking it could have something to do with rotation - did I rotate in Windows or in LR? I know what I do now, but have no recollection what I might have been doing on this shoot.
But neither one really explains why Develop would take an image and stretch it.

Metadata could indeed be the issue - it used to be a regular problem with Fuji files. If another program has rotated the file but not updated the tag, it can get a bit muddled. Writing the data to xmp and reading it back in used to be the trick for solving the Fuji ones, but I haven't seen any for a long time, so I don't know whether it still works.
