I have some photos that are vertical, however when viewing in Develop they switch to horizontal and they stretch. I can't determine why one photo turns and stretches, while a photo next to it maintains the vertical orientation.

Can you provide any specifics about the images? Are you looking at a mix of RAW and JPG images? Are they all the same type? What kind of camera are you using for the images?

I know with my Canon 2'D that if I shoot in Raw + JPG that in some cases in some software the RAW will be in the correct orientation and the JPG will be turned as it was not automatically turned.

Can you also make sure you are using the latest version of Lightroom, currently 1.3.1.

Is the camera set to auto rotate vertical images (page 98 of the English manual)? I don't know what happens if it doesn't but I've never had the problem with mine, although I always shoot RAW.
