Determining collections for a photo

I seem to be having a total brain drain. I cannot remember how to determine which collections I have assigned to a specific photo. A jumpstart for the rusty gray matter would be greatly appreciated.

A quick way, although not in my opinion ideal, is to use the Find pane to search for the file name. Let the Collections pane finish updating the numbers and where it doesn't show ' are collections holding that photo.

It has been asked of Adobe a number of times to put Check marks next to Collections that have selected images, as happens for Keywords. This would go a long way to solving this problem, but it has not happened, yet.

If you can see the image(s) in the grid window, hover your mouse over each of the collections (dont click)
If the image is associated with that collection it will show with a white border around the image.

Since you mention "specific photo" this will work for you, even though it is actually working in reverse.

Thanks for all of the above suggestions. I thought there was a simplier way, but I guess I was mistaken. Hopefully somebody at Adobe is listening.

Now, let me flip this question on its head. Is there an easy way to see which photos in a catalog do not belong to any collections?

Start in All Photographs in Grid mode. Select all your Collections, then do a select all on the images. Go back to All Photographs, and invert the selection. (edit>invert selection). Then you have all the images in your catalog not in a collection selected. You can then add a keyword, or create a new collection from here.

Unless you add something to the selected photos that you can then filter on such as a colour or stars, creating a collection with include selected checked is the quick and easy way.

I had a similar questions as ReplyToken... so if I'm reading the response correct, there is no way to get a quick overview in Lightroom of only the pictures that are not inside a collection ? ( it isn't currently a filter option apparently )

I can't find this either.
I would like this though. There is nothing better than to keep it organized from start.

Melissa's suggestion worked like a charm, as long as you do not mind making a collection of the images once they have been identified. Its not perfect, but it was quite easy to use, and it did exactly what I wanted it to.

Thanks! It works ok.
But MANY progams lack this feature: unfiled, uncatagorized, unclassified should be visible in order to organize things. And that is what LR is all about.

Of the UnSomething categories, the one that I would like most is the UnTaken photos! This would save me so much time, you have no idea!

Tip - give as much detail as you can. The better you justify why it should be added, the better the chances.
