Deleting 1 to 1 Preview and Smart Previews.

In my case, these are taking up 650 GB + 391 GB of storage

Within catalog settings, I have set automatically disregard 1 to 1 previews after 1 day.

I've selected all images, and then Library, Preview, Discard.......

The message discard all 590480, however, the irdata doesn't seem to reduce in size.

Any thoughts, thanks

Why do you think it's 1:1 previews that are taking up space, it could be standard size (which are not purged)? If you have 590,480 images, that's a lot of images. I have only about 80,000 or so and that's 96gig. that's somewhat proportional to yours.

There may be some delay as purging is done in background, not instantly, when you use the option.

I know nothing about smart previews, so no comment there.

Regular previews can be completely deleted (just delete everything underneath) and it will rebuild as needed. Browsing the library will be quite slow while it rebuilds, or you can select all photographs and use the library, build standard previews to build them overnight (or longer) to see how much comes back.

Long ago and a much older Lightroom I had some software that reconciled library and previews, and I found some 1:1 images left dangling, never deleted. Not a lot. But it wouldn't surprise me if there's some garbage in the preview folder. But that was a long time ago. my GUESS is if you wipe it and rebuild it will be substantially similar in size.

I'm assuming that you're looking at the size of <catalog> Previews.lrdata? That includes both 1:1 previews as well as standard-sized previews.
650 GB / 590,480 photos = 1.10 MB/photo, which is in the normal range for standard-sized previews -- my largest catalog uses 1.13 MB/photo.

Smart Previews - if you're looking to delete all of them, quicker to delete the actual file. Obviously if you only want to delete some then that's not so helpful (although you could delete all and just build the ones you want, could be quicker).
