Is there anyway to have the filename become the default caption in the metadata automatically during import?

My online display and sales site takes the caption if present and I'm ending up with all my photos showing "SONY DSC" as the caption. I'd just as soon the caption were left blank, but in any case I really don't want the camera brand showing up there.

This appears to be a DNG converter problem, since I ran this batch through there and imported the DNG. When importing the raw, the caption remains blank. So another workaround would be to blank out the caption after import.

Thanks,

To blank out the caption after import, you could apply a metadata preset on import that included a blank caption.

Unfortunately, Lightroom doesn't have the facility to copy metadata to other metadata, which is what you're asking for here (though the filename would be an odd thing to stick in the caption, but if that's what your site takes...) I filed a feature request for this many months ago, and perhaps you should too.

In the meantime, you could do this using a third-party tool like Exiftool on import or export.
