Default camera specific develop settings

Bot sure exactly what I want to do here.. I want to be sure no develop settings are applied to imaged from either of my bodies so I am starting with the RAW NEF file, and then I want to apply one of the same camera profile to images from both bodies.

I created Presets from the profiles I would likely use with the intent to apply these to images from both bodies at ingestion..

I used the Restore Adobe Default Settings button to undo any settings I may have applied previously, but I see that there are still settings like Brightness that are being applied as part of the default. Why is this? I don't necessarily find the images to be too bright, just curious if I should leave it this way and just apply my Camera Profile develop preset on top of it? If I understand correctly, LR is applying it's own develop steps to the RAW NEF file and it's robust application of Brightness tends to blow out highlights that I have properly exposed. When I reset the Brightness slider to ', the highlight indicators disappear confirming my understanding. So how do I reset everything so that the RAW file is untouched when it is ingested, and then create and apply a preset that is based on the camera profile I want without the added brightness?

Yes, there are non-zero defaults for Blacks, Brightness, Contrast, the curve, Sharpening and NR.

Sure, just apply the camera profile on top of those. Or if you prefer the look with a Brightness of ', that's fine too. There's nothing inherently more "correct" or "original" about either setting. Pick what works for you.

There is really no such thing as an "untouched" raw file. Here's a blog post I wrote about it.

I'm assuming the camera profiles impart changes to the tone curve and not the Basic adjustments...if so, applying the profile over the default setting still includes the default settings...the profiles don't seem to make Brightness adjustments. So, I'll have to resave my profile presets with the lower Brightness settings.

The profiles have no (direct) effect on the sliders. They're not like Presets; profiles are applied before any of the sliders.

Bear in mind though, that 25 and 5' are just arbitrary numbers. They could just as easily be called ', 1'', or Fred.

If you get time, just try something - shoot a file Raw + Jpeg and set the Camera Calibration profile to Camera Standard (the emulation profile) with it set to 25/5'. That should be a pretty close match for your as shot exposure. I'm guessing ' won't be. And then please do let me know if my memory is failing me!
