D300 White Balance Correction

Well, sooner or later it was bound to happen. Somehow my D3'''s WB settings changed. This was most likely through user error, but anything was possible. While I just found out about the change, it appears to have happened some time ago in the middle of a long shoot (which tells you how far behind I am in editing my current images). Thankfully, most of my images were RAW so they can be corrected with no impact to image quality. But, here is where I could use a little advice. Nikon has an adjustment setting for WB running from Amber +6 to Blue +6, with zero being no adjustments to the WB. The adjustments use a Mired scale, and the camera was set to Blue +6. I could just eyeball the images, which cover all kinds of lighting situations, but I would like to be a bit more methodical in getting the images back to a more reasonable temperature/tint (in LR lingo). I do realize that like all other settings, WB is subjective. However, I would really like to initially evaluate the images without Blue +6. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try this -- shoot a white balance target with your camera at Blue +6, and again with it neutral, under a couple of different lighting scenarios (sunlight, shade, tungsten) and compare the resulting temp and tint numbers in Lightroom. That should give you an idea of the relative change between the two.

Hi Mark,

That's what I initially had thought to try out. Since the available lighting in the images was all over the place from multiple shoots, I was afraid that I would get a wide variety of results from the new shots if I tried to match some of the lighting conditions. Perhaps too much to make any sense? But, it probably is the best place to start.

Have you tried the Quick Develop panel adjustments? They'll adjust relative to the existing setting. If that just needs to warm the images relative to their current setting, that could work.

As an aside......... The firmware update for the D3'' improves the Auto WB. The latest version is 1.1' and it makes the Auto WB function very good. I tend use it a lot when I'm out and about and only set specific WB in studio conditions.

I did upgrade to the 1.1' firmware when it was released, thanks. I, too, usually have my WB on auto and do my tinkering in LR when I have the time and a good monitor.
