When trying to open my NEF files I get the following message. "The files appear to be unsupported or damaged."
Does anyone know if there is a software fix to allow the downloading of D3'' NEF? Or am I making some simple error.

Any help greatly appreciated,
Ed

What version of Lightroom?

Welcome to our Forum.

In general it helps to fill in you Signature with such info as OS, System, Version of LR and Gear.

Hi!

I have an AMD 2.6 with 2GB ram. 4'GB internal drive. 16' external. CS3 suite and lightroom 1.' on box and 5/7 1.1 on disk. Other than that I am not computer savvy like most others I see.

Thanks for help,
Ed

I think D3'' support was added in LR 1.3

You'll have to upgrade (free) your LR version.

Currently the most recent release is LR 1.4.1. It's only been out for 2 days, you might want to wait a bit and see other folks results before upgrading to that version. It's available here:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3892

although as I write this, that link is reported "down for maintenance"

You can also uprgrade to 1.3.1, which has been out for quite a while, and seems quite stable, here:

Lightroom 1.3.1:

Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3815
Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=381'

DNG Converter 4.3.1 (running damaged DNG's through this fixes them):

Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3824
Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3818

You are using an outdated version of Lightroom...The current version is 1.4.1.

Support for the Nikon D3'' was added to Lightroom in version 1.3.1 so at minimum that's the version you need to install.

Got it!

I want to thank you all. I just got Lightroom yesterday from a continuing education place and thought it was up to date. Since I'm not up to date why did I think the software would be? Man, do I have enough life left to get into the mainstream of you folks? I've been shooting cameras for thirty eight years but can't assimilate 2'' years of computer progress that has taken place in the last 1' years. I hope you have patience for newbie's. This is a different world you folks live in.

Will upgrade immediately 1.3..1

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

Don't sweat it, this is probably the friendliest LR forum you'll find. Welcome.

You might want to scan the Tips/Tricks forum and threads. That's the closest we currently come to a FAQ section. It does answer some of the most common questions that tend to befuddle newcomers to RAW processing in general and LR in particular.

When you start asking questions in earnest, it helps if you'll consolidate the tech specs you mentioned in your first post into a signature block. Have a look at the responders in this thread for samples, and access the function thru "User CP" upper left.
