Custom metadata fields for LR3?

Since I have recently been dissuaded from adding all my custom fields from Expression Media (People, Event etc) into a keyword hierarchy preceded by * to force them to the top of the list, I would like to know if there's a way to use these fields as I did in EM in LR3? That way I could leave the keyword list flat, containing just descriptive words, and keep people, event etc. in IPTC fields.
