I have had 2.1 installed for a couple of months and everything has been going smoothly until today.

My workflow is after I import a new set of photos from camera or disc I run through and mark the rejects with an X. Then I hit CTRL+Backspace to delete them. This has worked fine until today. Now that command won't work nor will hitting the delete key remove the rejcts.

Another thing that I have noticed is that some images in grid view have suddenly acquired a new background colour.

Any help please:?:

Peter

Generally with LR, when something that normally works suddenly does not a quit and restart will 'fix' things. Lacking that deleting or setting aside the pref file often does the job. (described in Troubleshooting Steps)

Peter,

What exactly happens when you Ctrl-Backspace with some photos marked as rejects? The reason I ask is that I've noticed a tendency for LR to sometimes report that "' files are marked for deletion" when I know that there are files marked. If I wait a few minutes and try the Ctrl-Backspace again (not touching anything in between), it works correctly. I can only assume that something has to catch up in the catalog from what I see on screen. Definitely disconcerting, however. I don't have the fastest computer around, but I only have about 8k images in the catalog.

Thank you Don and Bruce

Unfortunately Ctrl+Backspace appears to have a mind of its own with my original catolog (2'''' plus pics). I have restarted my computer and patiently waited. Still the problem remains.

I then carefully followed the work around of deleting the preference file and starting a new catolog. This was successful and after importing a few pics into the new catolog Ctrl+backspace worked fine there. However when I opened my original catolog I was back to the old problem of delete not working with either ctrl+backspace or the delete key.

Furthe investigation has revealed that the delete option IS working in some collections and not in others. Very curious indeed
Thank you

Hmm, I'm concerned about your use of the word 'collections'. I don't know anything about your level of Lr experience, so please don't take offense, if I ask, you are aware that there's a SIGNIFICANT difference between the way delete works in folders, and the way that it works in collections? And in fact pick/reject flags also are not globally set between folders and collections.

I only ask because this could explain the inconsistency you're seeing.

Different background color? Can you describe this more, or perhaps a screenshot?

Thanks Brad
First I would describe myself as moderatey experienced, I've been using LR for over a year. Self taught in all aspects with the help of this forum from time to time. No offence at all, I know there is plenty to know and I appreciate help.

I wasnt aware of a significant difference in the way delete works in folders or collections.

My work flow has been to import photos into LR from camera card, occassionally from other media.

I usually go through after the import and X the rejects and remove them with ctrl+backspace. The remaining photos are sent to collections or smart collections.

After that I generally access pics for further use through the collections. This is where I have been re-sorting and being a bit more aggressive on keepers. Non keepers get the X and these are what I am now trying to remove. It would be something of a hassle to chase them all to their folders,

Background colour sorted, I think. For various puroses I was colour flagging photos in LR 1.4 which gave a little coloured flag icon. In 2.1 these pics are showing in grid view with the colour as a background surround (terminology?). Mea culpa!

Hope that makes sense,

(Teacher in self taught is a bit like self defence in court)

Regards
Peter

Unfortunately, 'remove from Lr/delete from disk' doesn't work inside a collection. By design, you can only 'remove from collection', (the debate on the why's and wherefore's has been long and vociferous).

There is a work around, termed the 'splat-delete'. Within a collection, select the images to be deleted, and press ctrl-alt-shift-deletekey. You'll get a dialog requesting permission to completely remove the images from Lr, and move the actual image files to the Windows recycle bin.

Thanks for that. Problem solved
By the way do you recommend Kelby's book on LR2, its about $A9' so I'm a bit slow to commit.

Can't say about Scotts' book as I do not own any book about Lightroom. Being a database programmer for my daily life, I felt so much at home right from the pre 1.' beta versions... and this forum is better than anything! ;)

That said, I probably miss Victorias' book which is somehow a resume of all questions asked here. :D

The best I can do for you is to redirect to our stack of findings... 8)
