cropping problem

how do I rotate an 8x1' crop so it's vertical instead of horizontal? I tried creating a preset there with 1' x 8, but it always comes up horizontal. Same thing with the other ones, 4x6, 5x7 and so forth.

A couple of times while pushing and pulling it around, the crop rectangle suddenly redrew itself the way I wanted, but I have no idea how I accomplished that.

Any hints?

That's how you do it. After a while, it's second nature.

My personal move is to take the upper right hand corner and drag it upward and leftward from landscape(or downward and rightward from portrait) out of the frame, until the orientation 'flops'. It's awkward to learn, but I find with usage, it's actually faster than clicking some portrait/landscape button, because you never have to let go of the corner drag handle.

Thanks, I finally got it to flip, but I doubt I could explain it to anyone. Particularly since LR insists on moving the crop frame opposite of every other graphics program. If I go the upper right corner with the grab hand, first of all I can't drag "up", I have to drag "down", and secondly I can't get it to go past the edge of the frame, so that doesn't work for me. What finally does it to get the resize icon showing in the lower right corner and drag it toward the opposite corner. Eventually it flips. Then I can use the hand to drag, counter-intuitively, the crop frame where I want it, and then resize it with the edge things, being careful not to use the corner or it will flip back again...

Brandon, the crop frame doesn't really move, you move the image behind it , the frame changes only in ratio, aspect, etc.

Oh, I see, I didn't explain it well, the corner doesn't drag out of the frame, I just move the 'drag cursor' there. Doesn't matter, if you've figured out a repeatable way.

Also, when the crop frame is sized at full frame, try just clicking and dragging the desired crop within the image, completely inside the crop frame. Of course if the crop frame is already smaller than the image, it reverts to dragging the image around.

I think the value in Lr's 'moving image' vs. the more common 'moving frame' is more easily discernible in the rotation/alignment mode. In this operation, the Lr method makes a lot more sense, IMHO.

I'll agree that rotation/alignment is easy to figure out in the LR method. But it's equally easy the other way too. And the basic cropping operation is more "natural" the other way, especially coming from working with enlargers and paper...

Think about moving you image under the matte when framing in daylight...

If you first click the Crop Frame Tool (the icon to the left of the Aspect: text, then you can crop the way you want, intuitively and without having to depend on the "flop."
