Hi there,
Another newbie here. I read through and watched a few tutorials to try to find the answer to my problem and didn't quite find it. I had imported two sets of images that are put into catalogs by date. I went into many of these photos cropped and straightened. I then exported the images. Then (realizing this was a mistake) moved the cropped images to another folder. When I look at the thumbnail image it looks fine, but when I view the images in the Windows viewer I saw the cropping/straightening is showing the black cropped areas that you would see in LR in Develop mode. I then went back in LR and realize I had the dreaded ?. I have rectified that by moving the images back to the exported place. I thought this may rectify the cropping issue, but it has not. Can anyone tell me why my cropped changes did not export properly?

I'm confused and probably not understanding you properly.

How did you do the export? What settings are selected in the Export dialog?

When you "look at the thumbnail image" and it looks fine, how are you viewing this? In Lightroom? Outside of Lightroom? If so, what viewer are you using?

How are you viewing the images that show "black cropped areas"? What "black cropped areas that you would see in LR in develop mode"? I don't see black areas in LR Develop mode (I do see areas which are darkened, but are definitely not black). Lightroom exports should not have black areas.

Lastly ... I'm not sure I would recommend "catalogs by date", especially for a newbie, I would think one catalog is a superior way of handling things.

Pat, welcome !!
To help us help you could you please take a moment to fill in your signature in the "userCP' that is found in the nav-bar at the top left of the page - thanks.
Now what file type are you using and what catalog settings for saving develop settings?
That is do you have "auto-write to xmp" turned on in the catalog settings/metadata? Have you saved to the file with cmd-s?

Always move files in LR if possible that way the link to the file is not broken and you won't get the ?
If you do get the ? you can just relink the files or folders by clicking the ? and following the menu that comes up.

Hi Pat, welcome to the forum!

I'm going to make 2 wild guesses....

1. You're viewing the original files in Explorer, which is why they're not cropped. You want to go find the exported files instead.

2. You set the export file format to 'original' which didn't apply any of your changes.

Hello all,
Thank you so much for the responses. I apologize for not providing enough info, and will fill out the signature area shortly. I believe Victoria was correct, when I exported the file format was set to 'original' and my changes were not applied - although the cropping thing was very strange. Anyways I exported correctly and everything is fine.
Again thank you
Pat
