My process: on holidays, I shoot monuments in a random order (exterior, interior, details, general views etc...). When I come back, I make a selection and I sequence the selected photos to give an understandable view of each monument. I do this with collections and it takes time (15'' photos on average for each sequence).

Problem is, there is no way (to my knowledge) to save the sequence once it is done and to restore it easly, in case the catalog corrupts itself but also in case I inadvertently click on "sort by..." button.

LRTransporter does save the sequence in a text file, but I did not find any mean to restore this sequence from this text file. Even with the SDK, I did not find a way to create and populate a collection, or, at least, to change the sequence in a collection.

Did I miss something or is it something that is not possible to do? In the last case, is it a feature that could be planned for a future release?

Thank you

Do an Export as Catalog, unticking the negatives and previews.

If you were doing this work in a collection, surely any mistaken Sort By can be reversed by choosing to sort by User Order?

Thanks a lot John,

This really covers my expectations:
- The new catalog can be saved on different disks (just in case !)
- My "User Order" can indeed be retrieved after another "Sort By".

There was another need that I did not express but which is also covered by your advice. I have the project to move my main catalog (+12K photos) to another hard drive. I think that I can do that simply by exporting the root folder as a catalog, this time with the negatives, to the new hard drive: all the existing collections should be preserved, shouldn't they?

I spent all day yesterday studying the SDK and other plugs-in just to find out that there was a simple way to do that!

Thanks again

In LR, right click the + sign in the Folders panel and choose Add Folder. Point to the new drive and click OK. Then in LR, drag your existing folder over to the new drive. I would do this if I am happy I have everything backed up perfectly and could get back to my starting position if anything ever went wrong.

Alternatively, I would just copy the folders in Explorer. Then in LR, right click the folders and choose Locate Missing Folder, then point it to the new hard drive.

Export As Catalog is more for moving your work (with or without the originals) between different machines. So I might run through a set of new pictures on my Mac laptop, do an Export as Catalog including the negatives (originals). This creates a folder which I move to my PC desktop, where I open my main LR catalogue and do Import From Catalog.
