Creating jpg's for web gallery

Pardon m for starting this thread but I have reached the end of my rope and heading for a mental break down.

Here's my story:

I have edited my RAW images (taken with a Canon 2'D) and exporting to put them online. I have tried endless amounts of compression settings and basically tired of getting large file sizes and relatively poor images.

This image is 192 kb:

6''x575-IMG_'156.jpg



The file size seems high, no?

This image is 2'6.46:
6''x575-IMG_'168.jpg

To me this image doesn't look good :(


Another way "I skinned the cat" - I use LR to make a photo gallery, then I use the large images it creates and get rid of the other stuff - with this technique I am also getting huge file sizes. (I am using about 7' for a compression value).

I really am at a loss here.
What do others do?
Can someone maybe give me some ideas on work their work flow?

Well, noise in an image can contibute to large file sizes.
Personally, I thought the sample images could use a little sharpening. How would you describe your dissatisfaction with them? Besides the file size issue.

Mark, have you tried ticking the 'minimize embedded metadata' checkbox. That'll strip a little more off the file size. As far as I know, the web gallery photos use the same export pipeline as the normal export, so you should be able to get the same results on a normal export.

I'd be inclined to thump up the export sharpening and turn down the quality a bit further, and see how they look.

I noticed after I asked about sharpening that Mark was using 1.4.1, which I don't believe supports export sharpening, or print to file (with output sharpening).

Yes, I us LR 1.4.1 and I was going to ask about export sharpening. I will be upgrading soon.

After many trials I have come up with a good exporting setting.
Thanks for your input.

Victoria - yes I have 'minimize embedded metadata' checkbox on export - it helps.

Correct Quality 5' slider. Screen shot attached. These were shot with a Fuji S3 RAW with a Nikon 1'5/2.8 Macro lens
