After doing too much of my file management workflow through my operating system in the past, I've finally started using LR for everything: import, previewing and deleting, moving things around from one folder to another, etc.
However, I'm not sure I'm doing it all correctly, and I'm worried I'll unwittingly recreate past problems.
Here's what happened today that raised concerns for me. When I imported today from my camera directly into LR, I used the dialog box to import from device, put in a specified folder, and I created a new folder inside that folder. For example, all the shots were waterfall shots, so I imported them from my camera into the waterfalls folder and created a new subfolder inside that one for Latourell falls specifically, so I can maintain my structure of having the shots in that folder organized by various local waterfalls.
However, once the import was over, when I click on the waterfall folder to see the subfolder structure, those subfolders are not visible. All the photos are there, but they are not segregated by subfolder structure.
Any ideas whey that would have happened? I really like having a multi-level folder structure, keeping that on the harddrive in C
ictures and having LR show that structure accurately in the Folder view of the library module. I have other folder/subfolder structures visible there, but the folders were imported that way from the OS to begin with.
Also, is there I way I can get this folder structure to be visible in the catalog view as well. The catalog view always just shows the totality of pictures, never organized by folders or sub categories. I'm worried that I'm creating a parallel organizational system that somehow is not going to be cataloged, and as I just rectified a similar problem from having used 2 computers, a shared network, and 3 versions of LR, I don't want to create another mess for myself.
