I currently use a directory structure of:
Photos\YYYY\MM\YYYY-MM-DD\YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS_SEQUENCE#.ext

I can't get that in Lightroom, though. Is there way to have a completely custom folder name on import? What do you use as a workaround? I know I could buy downloader pro, but after buying this I'm resistant to shelling out for another program just to get directories renamed on import.

I don't mind switching to a new convention if there's one that works well w/ Lightroom and has some logic.

I was thinking of switching because I picked up another camera and wanted to add a session name to the filename so there's some description of place and camera. Thus the file name would be something like date/time info__session name__camera__sequence

Any ideas for a preset and how to do this w/ the Lightroom downloader? If not, what would be a good workaround integrated into a workflow.

There are as many way as there are photographers (almost). But what I do is that I create a folder at the proper place in the structure like YYYY-MM-DD_session_name, copy from CF card to there and import from original place. Lightroom take care of camera model and time for us...

Others may come with other good ideas to. In the end, you have to find what fits you the best...

I use YYYY/MM/DD/custom name-DDMMYY-#seq. Searching by date is easy enough, so there's no need to have the full YYYY-MM-DD for a folder where DD will suffice.

You could create a naming template for the files like yymmddhhmmss-custom name-camera-seq in the filename editor. Then just enter the session name as custom text each time.

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I started using this system because it was the default in some blog I read a while ago. I'm not sold on it.

I do like having the ability to create the folders automatically as I often don't download
pics for a while at a time (as in I try not to take my computer on vacation). How are you guys doing it programmatic ally in your workflow?
