CR2+JPEG vs CR2?

As I am going thru my collection and removing numerous files not needed, i notice that some have extension/filetype as CR2, some have JPG, and some are "CR2+JPEG" - yet I have no idea how this happened or what it means exactly. Anyone care to shed some light?

The CR2+JPEG indicates that you imported the CR2, but Lightroom has detected a sidecar JPEG. Only the CR2 is in the library.

If they are separate, then they were imported separately (both are in the library).

If I delete all the JPGs next to it, will that annotation disappear?

Also, where can I learn more about what a sidecar jpeg means to me.

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that you can safely delete those JPEGs, and the "+JPEG" will then disappear. Try it and let us know.

A sidecar file is a file by the same name as the original, with a different extension. When you're shooting raw+jpeg, you get sidecar jpegs. Some cameras generate sidecar audio files. Or when you write the XMP out and your original is a raw file, you get a sidecar XMP file.

In this case, you probably shot raw+jpeg, and then imported from a directory containing both.

I tried this a while back, and still haven't figured out how to get rid of the +jpeg. Deleted the jpegs, tried synchronising the folder and all sorts. In the end I saved to xmp, deleted from the catalog, and reimported. So do let me know if you find a way round it... I must remember to report it to Adobe!

I haven't found any other way... yet.
