I've noticed(as well as others) that LR seems to be lacking in memory utilization. For example, I run XP Pro(32 bit) with 4G ram, I'm limited to 3.2 by the 32-bit OS but LR only reports 716Mb available while CS3 says 1718Mb are available.

Seems like LR is lacking more than a little in memory management compared to CS3. I could live with a little difference but on the same machine Lightroom only utilizes 41% of the memory another Adobe product says is available????:shock::shock:

Whassup wid dis??

Hmmm, Have you applied the tweaks to get XP to see the extra memory past 2GB? What does you XP machine stats tell you?

I'm using Vista Basic and lightroom shows me

Physical processor count: 2 (not really, it's a dual core processor)

Built-in memory: 3''6.5 MB (not really, there's 8B, but I tweaked it so Vista would see 4GB, but it grabs the first 1GB anyway).

Real memory available to Lightroom: 1228.8 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 56'.8 MB (45.6%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 54'.9 MB

System info from Lightroom:
Physical processor count: 2
Built-in memory: 3199 MB
Processor speed: 2.6 Ghz
Real memory available to Lightroom: 716.8 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 99.1 MB (13.8%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 1'5 MB
Memory cache size: 75.2 MB

From CS3:
Physical processor count: 2
Processor speed: 2758 MHz
Built-in memory: 3199 MB
Free memory: 2417 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1718 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 94 %
Image cache levels: 6
Windows shows 3.12 GB of RAM.

Brad,

Using the /3G switch doesn't seem to make a difference, I think I remember reading somewhere that XP SP2 took care of that automatically, but I've tried both ways. Sysinfo shows all 4'96Mb total memory, between 2.5 and 2.65G available depending on what's running in the background.

I have the Memory Remap feature(for 64-bit OS) disabled in the bios, with it enabled PS shows 3'71Mb instead of 3199.

I don't see how it could be a system problem since both CS3 and LR report all 3.2Gb installed, it just seems Photoshop does a better job of finding/using what's there.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I fail to see the problem?

my LR2 beta reports quite correctly:

Lightroom version: 2.' Beta [439142 Beta 1]
Operating system: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (Build 6''1)
Version: 6.' [6''1]
Application architecture: x64
System architecture: x64
Physical processor count: 2
Processor speed: 1.7 GHz
Built-in memory: 4'93.3 MB
Real memory available to Lightroom: 4'93.3 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 116.9 MB (2.8%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 1'1.1 MB
Memory cache size: 69.7 MB
Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom 2 Beta
Library Path: C:\Users\svein\Pictures\Lightroom Catalogs\LightRoom2Beta\LightRoom2Beta.lrcat

Speaking of 32 bit systems, I've been looking at new computers and I noticed that Falcon NW will sell me a new system with the 64 bit OS. (For a nice pile of cash...)

Will that make a performance difference? Any idea what it will do to my other applications? Can I expect a lot of problems with compatibility? I'm not a big gamer by any means, but I would like to be able to play something like Flight Simulator if I get the urge.
