My son recently created an iCloud album to share family photos. That album can be accessed by the iPad Photos app, but that album cannot be opened directly on Windows. (Apple: why not?) What workflow would allow me to copy these photos into Lightroom Classic?

You could log into icloud.com from any web browser and download them from there. Maybe someone can suggest an easier way?
John,

Thanks for the suggestion. When I logged into my iCloud account, all I could see were my own (and my wife's) photos, not the shared folder from my son.

The images in the shared album are not downloaded until you select them all and choose "Copy". At which time they are downloaded to the device (iPhone). Once they are on your phone you can save them to your camera roll.
After you have them in your Camera Roll, open Lightroom and import to the Lightroom Cloud manually if you do not have iPhone Photos set to automatically import. You can then sync the Adobe Cloud to Lightroom Classic
