Copying GPS Metadata

I note that Lightroom 2 is able to display GPS coordinates, if a photo has these emedded. It also has a neat feature that allows you to click the GPS field, which opens Google maps to show exactly where the photo was taken. I have a Nokia 611' Navigator phone that I use as a navigation device and geotracker, and it enables me to take a photo and at the same time embed the GPS coordinates of the location. Lightroom can read these files and display the coordinates.

What I've ben trying to do is copy the GPS coordinates from that reference photo taken with the Nokia and apply that to other photos taken with my DSLR at the same location. Unfortunately, I can't find any way to do this, especially since Lightroom won't show a blank GPS field in the metadata section, if no GPS cordinates exist in a photo.

Have I missed something, or is this not a feature of Lightroom? It seems odd that the metadata fields don't have the option of including GPS coordinates manually, when it does so for everything else.

The trouble is that the GPS data is EXIF data, so supposedly immutable, and the world is still waiting for an agreed field for a manual override.

You need to look at 3rd party tools - try Geosetter on PC and HoudahGeo on Mac.

You're most likely right. Pity, as GPS geocoding capability seems to be becoming a frequently requested feature.

And, if I may add: coupled date/time (GMT) and local date/time (daylightsavings and all) based upon GPS will be available.

They've been too cautious with metadata generally. In this case, it would be no harm to provide fields for the user can enter GPS coordinates manually, and then sometime in the future marry those fields up to agreed standard locations.

For now you can use those programs I mentioned to add GPS data to images or sidecar files. They read tracklogs or you can get the coordinates by drag and drop to Google maps. Also consider ImageIngester which can read tracklogs.

Using sub programs to do the dirty work, just makes things even more complicated in the long run. The easiest solution in my case is to take a geotagged photo with the Nokia and associate that with like photos taken with a DSLR. At the end of the day it's not an overly onerous task and, fortunately, not something that I have to do every day.

Agree. Just a matter of which external device requires the least effort or learning curve. No 'easy' solution at the moment.

We still don't know if you are Mac or PC based... But if you use Geosetter, just click the phone's tagged photo and a pin will appear on the map. You can then apply that pin's location to all other images in a wink. ;)

I'm a PC user. I didn't get a chance to fully check out Geosetter and I'll do that today.

Update: I just downloaded Geosetter and tried it out. Excellent! It just shows that Lightroom could do this, if Adobe wanted to do so.

They've got lots of other things to do right first! Geotagging is still a niche activity and easily stands separate from the rest of Lightroom's functionality. Adobe would soon be drawn into devoting development time to supporting all sorts of different tracklogs and other variations, rather than doing things they're good at or things the program really, really needs. So while I agree they should provide fields to enter the GPS data manually, leave full map and tracklog solutions to third parties.

Thank you all for sharing your info and knowledge.

I am now using Geotagger to tag the photo's, "read data from file" and click or alt-click on the arrow next to the GPS data in LR to see the location in satelite (Google) or Map (Yahoo). So I have removed MS ProPhotoTools (only GPS is in there that I cannot do with LR) and MS "Virual Earth beta".

Now I can (and do) search my traveling photo's and search on what location they were made. A tiny bit like make the trip again.

Thanks guys, it looks like a short holiday now and then doing this :-)
