I have decided to take the plunge and convert my workflow to DNG( I will archive the original nef for any "if and when" situations in the future)

My question is can I convert my existing NEF's with their XMP sidecar files (created in Lightroom) to a DNG? If this is possible/advisable, what is the best method?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to Lightroom Forums Marc!

I do this frequently when I didn't took time to convert at import time. Select all those NEFs in the Library module and in the menu under "Library", select "Convert Photo to DNG...".

Hi Cameron
I have decided not to embed NEF file as it will result in a large working file. I have saved the original raw files separately, just in case I ever need them.

Denis,

do you bother to embed the original raw file? What would be the benefit of doing this?

I don't because I do not use other raw editors than "Photoshop Lightroom" or "Adobe Camera Raw". Embedding the original will increase file size by much but will let use the manufacturer's software. Or, do as Marc and keep the original raw for such cases.
