Hi, Just noticed this major problem. I work with lightroom classic on a windows PC. This is a very fast PC and storage of 12 TB. I have 2 catalogs with each over 80000 images. When I work with the most recent files there is no problem and i can see all the different steps of changes in the history panel but when the files are some older (a few months) the history panel is completely empty for all files. So i cannot go back to previous steps. This problem must be rather recently as I work already for many years with LR and I never faced this issue.
Anyone ideas on what went wrong ???? Karl

To be clear, I am a photographer. You can ask me anything about photography and also about photo editing in lr. I even think it is appropriate that I have a clear idea about the usefulness, operation and possibilities of the catalog. but no, I am not an IT specialist who understands what to do if the program fails. Sorry, but "the good advice" from this forum is too technical, vague and unclear for me. Since I have the original files and the final edited copies, I will accept that I do not have the contents of the history panel because the help via this forum is of no use to me.

One thing I think this group excels at is braking the technical down into terms that any one that is marginally computer literate can understand. You do not need to be an IT person to follow directions. If the directions are not clear, all you need to do is ask for more help.

People make mistakes, losing your history steps was a user mistake. If not then everyone would be having the same problem because of a bug introduced by the update.

If you want to find your history and have good backup catalogs, then we can help. If you want to move on, then that is an acceptable choice too. However, if you don’t understand the mistake that was made then you might make it again.

We are volunteers and here t help.

I agree totally it's not our place to fix Adobe Lightroom issues. We pay for the software therefore surely we should expect it to work properly. I think
I have now been left behind by Lightroom. My camera is older, I only shoot jpgs I don't really need the level of sophistication on offer.

I am now slowly moving my photos into Apple Photos and will cancel Lightroom at the end of the year.

In the case here, this is not a Lightroom issue but a user issue. No app is delivered bug free whether from Microsoft, Apple or Adobe. This includes upgrades to the OS as well as upgrades to the app.

I certainly don't want to say that I am not the cause of the problem. I have access to BU's of catalogs and files, but what good is that if no one can tell me step by step what the solution is. OK, I'm an IT dummy, but if I don't have a clear plan, my actions could probably lead me from the rain to the drip

I beg to differ that in my case it was a 'user issue'! It is to do with updates going wrong, even when you follow the steps as instructed - it should work! And similar issues (with history and previews) have been experienced by other users. How have we all done something wrong?
I do appreciate that you are all volunteers, and thank you for the help received.

Just an observation - you contradict yourself! "It is not a Lightroom issue but a user issue" but "no app is delivered bug free"!!!!

"People make mistakes, losing your history steps was a user mistake" - how can the three people on here, and others on the Adobe forum, suddenly have made mistakes that would cause this issue?

I really just want to understand, and also still live in hope of a solution!

Not a contradiction. Does LrC have bugs? Yes. Is this one of them? I’l say no until someone at Adobe says otherwise.

I am happy for the people who don't have this problem and also for those who have solved it by just reverting to their previous catalog.

However, for me the issues are far more historical and I had to revert all the way back to v12. And the issues as mentioned above still persist for all images prior to 2017 (I have been using LR Classic since 2011).

I think it is more than just an issue with upgrading from 13 to 14, or 14 to 14.0.1. In my case I think there was possibly a catalog corruption way back with v13 (or maybe 13.3), but LR repaired it and continued on quite happily, passing optimising and integrity checks at every back up. Then a month ago (before upgrading to v14) I noticed all of these issues with edit history and previews, now mentioned by quite a few other people.

I have tried every suggestion made by those kind people who have replied, and I really appreciate their help, but the issues persist.

Can you zip up the catalog (*.lrcat file) and the last good catalog and maybe the v12 catalog file, then send to me at [email protected] using the we transfer.com website? I can inspect the catalog database and have a better understanding of your issue.

Thank you and I really appreciate your offer to help. Unfortunately I am away from home at the moment and don't have my LR files with me, so I am unable to do this until next week! In the meantime, are you able to help the original poster? I am feeling a bit guilty about being an imposter in this post!

Can I ask, out of interest, under what circumstances might people want to go back to editing history on files from many years ago?

I have. Often when LrC up grades with a new feature or process version. More often I reset to the original and start fresh.

In my case the files are a few years ago, but only after quite some effort on my part (see my links given above), but for the other two posters, their affected photos are quite recent, e.g. all of 2023 for one, or a few months ago for the other. I think it is important to be able to see what steps you have already taken when working with an image. Plus, it should be the case that the history is there for you to see!

That's one of the problems with 14, for whatever reason, many users are finding that it does not make a copy of the old catalog to update for 14.
Can personally confirm that one, as well as losing all edits.

Though my problems started before v14! I suspect that some users are just discovering these issues for older images, i.e. they have been 'sleeper' issues that are now being revealed, as well as whatever is happening with the update to 14.
