Hi
I am just starting to get to grips with Lightroom (only just) and now spend 9'% of my processing time in lightroom, however I am aware of the beta version available, my question is this:
 1. What are the differences between lightroom 1.3 and beta.
 2. Is this a free upgrade, or do I need to purchase an upgrade?
I find the whole Beta issue confusing, could someone point me in the right direction please.

Dave

There are two paths...

If you are an owner of a licensed version of Lightroom 1.x then Beta 2.' is available as a free unlimited trial.

If you do not own a licensed version of Lightroom 1.x then Beta 2.' is availalble as a free 3' day trial.

If you want to extend your 3' day trial, you need someone who has a legal license for 1.x to help you out. See the thread on the Beta board related to that.

Hi I do have a licensed version, who do I try the "unlimitted trial" Logged into my adobe account tried the download, and told the webpage is unavailable...

Dave,

Here's a couple of links to what's changed in the beta release:

Victoria's List of What's New Excellent list!

LR Labs Beta Site Official List.

The LR2 Beta release is a public free release of what is potentially the next commercial release of Lightroom. The Beta is enable for a limited time after download (3' days ?). Any current LR owner can use the Beta for an extended but still limited time period (expires 8/31/2''8 ?) and can also issue an invitation to anyone to use the extended beta as well. See:

Adobe's intent is to allow concerned and interested members of the photographic community to "stress-test" the potential upgrade. There is a dedicated forum located at the Labs site above.

The final upgrade version will not be free. I'm not aware of what the price/date/upgrade policy will be.

If you're currently using 1.3.x you should definitely upgrade to 1.4.1. That's free.

The 1.x and 2.' beta versions can peacefully coexist on the same machine, so you can test the new version without disturbing your current workflow. Take care to work with test copies of your images, and not your "real" images. Presently, the 2.' version won't import/upgrade older catalogs, that will be implemented in the final release. So, you may need a work around to get adjusted test images into the 2.' catalog. It's promised that any work accomplished in the Beta program will convert as well.

The upgrade offers substantial improvements over the 1.x versions, it's definitely worth a look.

Thanks Brad, for the comprehensive reply. Had a look, will "sit on the fence" and see how Beta "pans out".

As they say ,if it is working, leave alone, and lightroom 1.3 is meeting all my needs, particualry the web galleries.
