Confused about develope presets

I see many available. I also understand the presets have a very different affect on jpg or raw, yet most presets that are available do not say if they were designed for raw or jpg. How would you know which they are for?

I am thinking most users of LR are doing raw. Any comments or insight appreciated?

I think you can assume any 'shared' presets you encounter are intended for raw.
I'd think that a preset intended for .jpg would be a very rare specimen, (I've never seen one), rare enough that it would be noted in the description.

You would need to create your own jpeg ones at present, I think these would be camera and shooting mode dependent.
I have requested that presets be able to be file type dependent so as when importing raw/jpeg combinations only the raw files get "developed."

Thanks, Geoff. I don't shoot jpg normally. I just wanted to make sure If I download some presets from the web and apply to raw files, the preset was for raw. Very confusing subject and not a lot of info to read.

I rarely shoot jpeg either but it could be useful....

A Develop Preset will work on any file generally.
Where you might see deviations is where a file contains white balance, or recovery, as JPEG and TIFF don't handle these like a Raw (or DNG from Raw) file.

One thing that you don't know is what a preset will effect. Even previewing the look can't give exact clues. Some work on one tool only, others use many, while a lot use everything..
