Ok, I admit bad management on my part to get to this point; that being I have two catalogs that may or may not be duplicates of one another. Too many external drives, bad naming on my part. Is there third party or Adobe software that can compare differences between .lrcat , lrdata files? I guess I could just import one into the other and sort our the virtual files later. That way sort out photo situaltion within the catalog. Better behaviour by me in the future. Want to merge as many catalogs as I can to avoid this problem in the future . Third party software might help. Any ideas? (andisoa)

You could use a plugin like List View and then do a comparison in Excel of images common to / missing from each; personally I'd probably just take a copy of one catalog, then merge the other and see what differences come up. That way you don't actually affect either catalog until you know what you're dealing with.

I was going to suggest ListView or Lr/Transporter. You can generate a list from each of the full filename, including the directory url. Comparing the 2 lists should give you a definite list of what files are common or missing from each catalog. To do this efficiently you need good Excel skills, but watch this video to get a good start.
Comparing just the filenames is a potential banana skin, as images with the same filename are not necessarily the same actual image.
Someone can comment on 'gottchas' to look out for, such as virtual images or images that might be stacked, etc..
