I don't have a very fast laptop (yet) so each time I compare two images it takes some time for LR to load the full images. While loading the images are displayed as 'unsharp', but sometimes I'm having trouble to see whether the image is really unsharp or whether LR is still loading. Is there a way to see the difference?

There should be a 'loading' bezel while it's loading the preview Dirk. Check in View menu > View Options > Loupe View panel, as you may have turned it off.

It is also possible that you are rendering the larger view so that you can compare the images. If you have a slower computer, you can select a large group of images and let lightroom generate the 1:1 previews overnight. That will appear to speed up the load times.
