Since version 5.x the Comment field in the Library module are unavailable. CL

The "Comments" tab in the right panel in Grid or Loupe view is used only when you have Published or Synced the image. If supported by the Publish service or allowed in the synced collection this will show comments made by users on the external service. I don't think that it has ever been writeable within the Library module itself.

The caption/description field is the IPTC field intended do be used to add your own comments and or description of the image.

There is also a plug-in called Big Note that adds an open ended text field that is also searchable in Smart Collections.

I just discovered this issue now too. I'd never needed to use comments before but need to on more than 50 photos today as a way of inserting the translation for some signage and instruction displays that appear in a shoot I did.
The Caption/Description field in the IPTC doesn't 'feel' right at all. Comments are comments not captions.

Why would Adobe have that field appear in the desktop version and then cripple it? That's like installing a doorknob in the middle of a wall!
C'mon Adobe!

Anyway ...got John's Big Note and looked at that. Thanks John. Problem is the inability to export those comments when sending images to the client ...becomes a major hurdle. The only way I see of doing it is to put the translations into the Keywords field in quotations (without any other punctuation as that causes everything to go wonky) and ensure the keywords are exported when uploading for the client.
Wierd too is that, Windows Explorer has a comments field which used to be useful for inserting comments but now it seems to be used to store the some other information instead ...at least for images that have GPS info ...Here's and example of what's in that field for one photo taken with a cell phone that recorded the location:

Anyone know what all that is? Something only Google Maps reads?

Also really strange is that Lightroom's Keyword Tags appear in the Windows Explorer "Tags" field, but only for:
1) photos I took using a cell phone (those had no tags when transferred from the phone to the computer and have not been exported ...so no idea how the keywords created in LR got stored in Windows Explorer)
2) photos that were edited in PS and saved as tiffs. (that I expect because the photos were already keyworded in LR)
3) photos exported to a folder after being processed and keyworded in LR (normal again)
Hopefully someone can explain #1.

Anyway the workaround for "Comments" appears to be the keyword field where they can be inserted like:
keyword, "comment with no punctuation except opening and closing quotation marks", next keyword, etc.
Not too search- index friendly but at least it gets them there and they are searchable.

When you shared a collection then it's possible to write into the comment field of individual images from within Classic:
12509

This information wil be visable in Lightroom Web for others and they can participate and leave comments too:
12510

Thanks Roelof, but I'm only on LR Classic CC and photos go to clients via ftp ...theirs or wetransfer, etc.
It would be too cumbersome to adopt LRCC and change my client's and my own workflows only for images requiring comments.
Doing it with the keywords worked. I used google translate then copied the results into the keyword field in LR Classic CC before exporting to jpegs and ftp'ing them. Done ...and not too difficult once I got at it.
