Color issues with importing already rendered sRGB images

This issue is killing me. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

When I import a jpg into Lightroom that was converted from a 5D RAW file in Photoshop, the files import and as soon as the preview is rendered, the color changes to a washed out extremely blue image with no reds at all. It looks almost identical to the "Cold Tone" preset. No matter what I have tried this happens. Here are the crazy details based on my tests...

-This does not happen when importing RAW files, only jpg files that have been exported by Lightroom or converted in Photoshop CS2.

-This only happens with files taken on a 5D camera. I have files from 2 different 5D cameras and they both do the same thing. I also have files that were converted from RAW files from a 1'D and 2'D and this issue doesn't occur.

-This only happens on my desktop computer. My laptop doesn't have this issue.

-This happens in Lightroom 1.4.1 and the 2.' Beta on my desktop (Window) PC.

-All of these images are saved with sRGB profile embedded however it doesn't seem to make a difference.

-When I reopen any of these jpg files in Photoshop, they look normal.

-My monitor is using sRGB profile and Lightroom has sRGB specified in both Color Space locations in the External Editing tab under Preferences.


I will continue to test further but I've pretty much run out of ideas. Has anyone else run into this before? Thanks in advance to your responses!!!

Here's a test that I just ran...

Imported a CR2 Raw file taken with my 2'D and one taken with my 5D. Adjusted the develop settings until they look right and then exported both images as sRGB jpgs to a new folder.

Then I imported the two jpg files. The one from my 2'D looks exactly like it did when I exported it. The one from my 5d looks very blue with no red in the image whatsoever. I can pull up both image in ACDSee or any other program including Photoshop and they book always look correct.

I would think that Lightroom wouldn't apply any presets to a jpg because you kind of assume that a jpg has already been edited and should be left as is unless you change something on it. So why won't lightroom show the rendered jpg as it really looks in it's sRGB color space?

To answer while waiting for Sean, I think he meant that that setting should not be ticked (selected). If it were ticked, it would enable a different default processing for a specific s/n body, which might explain the camera specific weirdness you're seeing.

Since you don't have it selected, that's not likely the cause.

You're correct in that LR's default behavior is to not apply presets to imported RGB files.

All that being said, I don't have any other suggestions for you. Sorry.

I would suggest comparing those two files with exiftool to find the meaningful difference. If you don't have exiftool already, a good web front-end for it is Jeffrey Friedl's image viewer.

Brad is right and knows by now that I don't always get back to posts quick, usually it's blitz and run. I generally squeeze forums in during writing breaks...

The reason I asked was that there may have been a preset attached on Import which can happen.

What happens if you use the Preset Zero'd on the 5D files?

I'm not sure what you mean. How do I zero the presets on import? I really do appreciate your responses more than you know.

There's a default preset called Zero'd - that's the one Sean means. Set it as the Develop Preset in the Import dialog and let us know what happens!
