Color changing when exporting to web

When sending my Nikon images from the library or develop module to the web module they change color and become dull. Please help me out with this. I'm sure it is probably something simple. I just recently switched to Nikon and this does not happen to any of the Canon images that I have from the past. The color is exactly the same in all of the modules and prints come back fine. It really doesn't make any sense to me!

Hi Andi, welcome to the forum!

So let me get this right... is it just viewing them in the Web module that goes dull, or when you export images to the web?

typically photographs look dull when they are saved in AdobeRGB colour space, and then showed on an sRGB device,
if they are not properly "colour managed".
So, did you shot JPEGs with AdobeRGB? in this case, did you use PictureProject to transfer the files to the computer?
You can tell that utility to include the colour profile into the photos, otherwise the colour profile is only "tagged" (that is
labelled in the metadata), but not "embedded": missing an embedded colour profile, many software just assign sRGB by default,
hence causing a conflict between the real colour space and the assigned one.

I was talking about the input files: the images coming out from a Nikon DSLR do NOT have an embedded
colour profile, it can be added later when transferring the images via PictureProject. This is not a problem
for RAW files (since they are not linked to any colour space), but it could be for TIFF or JPEG files, if the
colour profile on the camera is set to AdobeRGB. If you just copy that images straight from the memory
card to the PC, there will be no colour profile embedded in the files, and - if I don't go wrong - in this case
LR will assume sRGB as working colour space...

yes, they are "tagged", but not "embedded", while many applications look for an embedded colour profile

this will be a problem if you choose AdobeRGB on the camera, and the application assumes it is sRGB

Can you explain what you mean by "tagged but not embedded" as I don't understand your problem. If you shoot jpeg in sRGB or Adobe1998 LR will display the images correctly as the files have the colour space correctly embedded by the camera.

The terminology "tagged" is probably not quiet correct, the term embedded may be better but I don't think there is any difference.

Are you sure you are not getting confused with Nikon Picture Control settings ?

Badger, only sRGB and AdobeRGB can be 'tagged'. There is no provision for 'tagging' any other color space. But most software does not honor that tag anyway. It's just a loophole in a single standard.
The proper choice is to 'embed' the profile, which is a specific data segment, defined by the ICC, which provides the necessary color conversion data.

I've shot sRGb & Adobe RGB in my Nikons and they have looked correct in LR. I only shoot jpg when I'm messing about testing stuff or for E-bay etc..
