Collection and sub collections, files uncategorized?

Greetings,
I have 3'K photo in my LR 1.4.1. I have broadly categorized in them in collections by year, 2''' - 2''9.

Now I am going through each year, and adding sub-collections that group just the photos that are of the same event.

My question is: Let's say you have 1592 photos in the 2''9 collection. You've put 425 of them into sub collections inside of 2''9. Is it possible to see what ones have NOT been put in sub collections within 2''9?

With these small numbers, it would seem easy to count, but some of my yearly collections have 9''' photos in them, and thus it's more difficult to see what has not been subdivided.

I don't have access to the machine where I have 1.4.1 installed right now, so I can't test. Library grid view > Library menu > Photo > "Show Photos from Subitems". Try enabling/disabling that option, (it will show a check mark, when enabled). That should show just the items in the parent collection, but as I say I could be wrong, I can't verify it.

Assuming I understand your query correctly you could just colour label the already sub-collected 425 photos say blue. Then in your 2''9 collection you can filter out those with no colour label. These will be the ones you have not put in the sub-collection.
