I cloned a hard drive and renamed it as the original after cloning was done. Lightroom recognized the hard drive and no missing photos question mark present. I selected a photo and click edit in PS to edit the photo. When editing was done, I flattened and clicked save. When I go back to Lightroom, it has created a duplicate hard drive with the name Black Passport 2 as the original was named. I tried selecting a folder and click synchronize folder and it creates another duplicate in the duplicated name Black Passport 2. Any suggestions on how to get PS to recognize the cloned hard drive? I hope this is not too confusing.

Do you have both the old and new drives mounted? Can you post a screen shot of the Finder Left panel "Locations" section? Do you know about the "Capitalization issue? https://www.lightroomqueen.com/capitalization-catalog-error/.

What do you mean by "When I go back to Lightroom, it has created a duplicate hard drive with the name Black Passport 2 as the original was named. " How can LrC create and mount a volume? Do you mean folder instead of 'hard Drive'?

If you need it, then it’s not so funny.
I was not laughing! I was aghast that Adobe would let a problem like that out into the wild! One that required such an excessively complicated and embarrassingly goofy fix, and that had to be performed by their innocent users.

When we did something like that to our users, we either gave them a script to simplify the process or we got on their machines and fixed it ourselves. (I retired after a long time as a software engineer.)

It is really an Apple issue because Apple allows both case sensitive and case insensitive file systems. A file or folder name ‘APPLE’ and ‘Apple’ and ‘Apple’. The Character ‘A’, and ‘a’ read the same but use different Unicode symbols.

You know, I bet the Adobe programmers know that. There are lots of computer details from which users are protected by their programmers. Otherwise, what good are we?

Your reply eventually jogged my memory. So I went looking and found numerous sources like this one:

Adobe error "Case-sensitive drives not supported" or similar install error | Mac OS
You cannot install Adobe products on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system, such as HSFX (HFS+) or UFS. This limitation applies to both the startup drive as well as the drive onto which the software is installed.

The OP has not responded yet, and it is important that he does, because there are two possible problems that superficially look the same but aren’t the same. First, you can have a situation where Lightroom Classic shows two disks with the exact same name. The MacOS Finder only shows one disk. That is what the link is all about and that is a special version of the capitalization error. The other problem is where Lightroom Classic (and usually the Mac Finder too) shows the same disk twice, but with a number added to the name. So the first disk is called ‘Whatever’ and the second disk is called ‘Whatever 2’. This is a MacOS mounting error, not a capitalization error.

While you cannot install Adobe Products on Case sensitive volumes, that does not apply to any data (i.e. image files and folders).
MS Windows uses a case-insensitive file system. Apple supplies their Macs with case-insensitive file systems on all internal SSDs. Disk Utility defaults to case-insensitive when formatting a disk drive on a Mac. All my disk drives are formatted case-insensitive.

You have to know why you want a case-sensitive file system and ask for it to get one.

I will quote @Johan Elzenga when he was asked, "Would you say it's safe / ok to format the disk with the case sensitive version of the file system?"

If it's just the data disk, you will probably be OK. But why take a risk? Being a computer geek is hardly a justification.

Thanks so much to everyone who has replied. Events happened in my life and I could not attend to this issue. I have time now that I will go through your answers and troublshooting and I will update the progress. Thanks again to everyone.

Thank you kindly for responding to my question. I'm sorry for not responding earlier, but life events happened.
I took an iPhone photo of the both Black Passport hard drives showing in LR, but when I try to upload the image, it says it's too large.
As I said, I cloned the Black Passport 2 and disconnected the old/original drive from the computer and it was showing the new drive in LR. I had renamed it as before, Black Passport 2. It was showing up in LR and no missing photos showing. I edit in Photoshop and then save and it would normally go back to LR, but this is where the disconnect happens. The image is showing up in the folder on my computer, but not back in the folder in LR. It duplicated the name Black Passport 2 and made another folder the same as where the edited photo came from.
Any thoughts on this?
