A question about channels in LR:

The question is whether the RGB channels can be 'got at' and manipulated separately (as one can conceive of doing in PS) - specifically, can one swap colour channels ?

Hi SeptimusFry, welcome to the forum

No, that's outside of the limits of Lightroom - that's more pixel based editing, which is Photoshop's strength.

The most you can do resides in the HSL/Color/Greyscale panel of the Develop Module.

You can edit the Tone Curve beyond the Parametric limits but using ACR or editing by hand, but that is a global RGB operation.

keeping Ps and Lr separate

This is the sort of thing that Ps is famous for ... and is not part of Lr.

I was trying to get at these sorts of issues in my thread on abandoning Ps in favour of Lr.

The power of channels is awesome, and selections &c. It belongs in the more robust program.

A lot of the things I hear people wishing to be added to Lr are things that are essential Ps things. If they were included in Lr I'm afraid it would become the monster that Ps has become - and would cost a great deal more.

I'm happy that Lr is the program that I can turn to do almost everything. But I'm glad I have Ps for the heavy-duty things.
