Changing volume name

Sorry for all these questions. As I've moved to LR I am taking the opportunity to sort out some housekeeping too.

I would like to rename the volume that I imported into Lightroom. It's an external drive which is currently named "FCP Media 1" and would now like to rename it as "Photos" in light of what I now use this disk for. I looked in LR for a way to rename the volume but this doesn't seem possible. If I rename from outside of LR then the drive, obviously, shows as being 'offline' within LR. I thought I needed only to link the sub-folder within that drive to the new volume:sub-folder but this doesn't work as a means of reconnecting the images.

Can someone tell me how I can change the volume name?

Right click on the volume and choose Show in Finder. Once there rename the volume. Upon your return the old volume name will be dark and showing as offline. Your folders will have a ? . Right click on the topmost folder in the hierarchy and choose Find Missing Folder. Navigate to the folder on the drive and choose it. All your folder will now be back online. If you have more than one folder at the same level you'll need to repeat this last part for each.

Hi Gene. Thanks for the reply.
That's what I tried. I clicked on the My Photos folder you see in the image and chose to "Find Missing folder". It popped up the finder window and I chose the My Photos folder now on the renamed volume. After clicking "Choose" it just closed the finder window but it didn't reconnect. Everything remained showing offline.

Interesting. It worked fine for me.

Did you rename the drive outside of LR or inside? I don't think it should make a difference but it could be why we are getting different results.


Try renaming the drive from inside LR and see if you get different results. That's the only thing I can see that we did differently.

I tried both. The second time I right-clicked in LR and selected Get Info and changed the name there. How quickly did it reconnect those folders to the volume when you tried it? I only waited about 2 to 3 mins but there was no progress showing.

For the past few minutes, I have been changing names of my sub-folders with ease. I right click on the unwanted name> rename> type in new name > save. All my links are intact.

Here is another but round about way of doing it: create a new sub-folder with the proper name. Go back to the "old" one and open up the folder. Ctrl-A to highlight all images> drag all images to new folder> delete the old one.

Firstly, thanks for the help guys.

Just to reiterate - the issue is trying to change the volume name and then have those folders point to the new name. I too can change the folders and relink them with no problem.

I 'think' I've found the problem (by scaring myself half to death in the process). I think it's because my catalog is located on that same drive and so if you change the name of the volume it doesn't seem to be able to cope with the fact that it needs also to update the catalog location. I found this out because after changing the volume name I offlined the drive and restarted LR. It complained it couldn't find the catalog and at first I thought I'd lost it (that was the heart attack moment).


I think all I have to do is offline it again, and then locate the catalog on the drive when it asks and hopefully then it'll sort itself out.


I'll let you know.

If you want to change the volume name then here's my suggested process

[li]Exit LR[/li]
[li]Change the volume name[/li]
[li]Restart LR [/li]
[li]When asked point to catalog on the volume (now with its new volume name)[/li]
[li]Let LR boot - HEY PRESTO! You don't even need to relink the photos!!! They all link up automatically to the new volume name. [/li]

Excellent LJR!

I think your observation earlier was helpful too. I do in fact keep my catalogs on a different drive from my images so that could be why I wasn't having any issues earlier while you were.

Thanks! Actually it was because you wasn't seeing the problem that made me look at what could possibly be different. So you helped me go away and think again lol
