Some background: I'm a keen amateur photographer with about 45,''' photos on my internal HD, currently organised in iView Media Pro. About 98% are RAW files, with some JPEG and DNG files. I used to just use Lightroom for processing some files that I wanted to print or upload to a website.

I have recently imported all the photos into LR2 and I'd like to make more use of the programme. I'd also like to change to using the DNG format, but keep the original RAW files on my recently purchased Drobo

My filenaming format is Initials_Date_Filenumber, e.g MC_2''8-1'-'1_'1234.DNG

I currently physically organise my photos by location, e.g. Europe > Germany > Berlin > Bebelplatz becuase I can remember places better than dates and it's a method I've grown up with over the years.

If I switch to DNG and have my keepers on my main internal disk I'd like to keep the RAW files on my Drobo organised by date folders.

I had hoped that I could use some similar method to the "import from device" option to "import" the photos from my internal drive to the Drobo and have LR2 automatically organise them into dated folders. The import from folder doesn't seem to have the same options as import from device so I don't seem to be able to get LR2 to organise my photos by date on the Drobo

Any suggestions as to how I could do this? Am I missing some menu option in LR2 to allow me to import them drom one drive to another and have them automatically filed by date?

Thanks for any suggestions

Mike

If you change the file handling drop down to: copy or move, does it not give same facilities?

I'm at work at the moment, but I'll be looking as soon as I get home. I'll be over the moon if it's as simple as that!

You might want to consider using ImageIngester Pro to copy and organize the images. I prefer it to LR when I am converting/renaming/backing up files.

Good point! I've been using that when my workflow was IIP > iVMP, but I haven't used it as much when I started using LR as the first step of my workflow

I see where I was going wrong now.

When I pointed it at the top level folder containing the 45,''' photos it took some time gathering all of the previews before giving the next dialog where I could pick the options I wanted.

I wrongly assumed it was imported them straight away and canceled out of the process.

I've just been experimenting with a smaller sub directory and can not get it exactly as I want it.

Thanks for the help
