Is it possible to change the background colour in the library module when looking at a single image?

There are a few choices for the background colour on the Preferences>Interface tab.

You can also right-click/Control-click the background around the image, and choose the Background Color from the context menu that appears. (Lightroom is one of those programs where you'll see a lot more options if you right-click on everything.)

Whether you do it through the context menu or the preferences, you get only the shades of gray that are provided. I don't think there's a way to choose a custom color or shade of gray.
