sometimes I'd like to change the order of the pallettes i.e. put those Im using at te top together without te others in the way - or to temporarily hide those Im not using - is this possible?

I-S,

Yes and no. The palettes are ordered by design, especially in Develop, to reflect the preferred workflow. It's said, working from top to bottom, minimizes the interaction of one control on the next. Get the white balance right, then the overall exposure, and fine-tune down to detail. Hence, they're not changeable.

If you right-click on one of the pane headers, the context menu offers some choices.
Which panes are viewable are enabled by check-marks. You can turn-off the rarely/never used.

Additionally, if you choose "Solo Mode", only one pane stays open. As you choose another pane, the currently selected pane closes. In Develop module, combined with that, Ctrl-', opens/closes the histogram, Ctrl-1 opens/closes the Basic pane, Ctrl-2, the Tone/Curve, and so on. This more or less applies to all modules.

Play around with it and see if you can find something you can live with.
