Changing Lightrooms default handling of derivative files

When editing in an external editor like PS or one of the Nik plug-ins, is there a way of placing the resultant Tif in a specific folder. What I am trying to achieve is that the Lightroom catalog and the Derivative folder are backed up as 'works in progress', and handled differently from my originals, which I archive after ingestion, rating,adding bulk metadata, rating and renaming.

Use Export, and set the external editor as a post processing step. Then just save the setup as an export preset.

Just to make sure I understand you correctly. If I want to edit in say SilverEfex Pro, I would normally have gone Photo>Edit in>SilverEfex Pro. Instead I would now go File>Export with preset>Select the user defined preset.
Am I correct that the exported file, together with any Lightroom adjustments/metadata would be exported?

That's correct. In the Export dialog, Post Processing Steps has an option "Go to Export Actions folder". In this folder you can put shortcuts or aliases to the program you want to execute. That program will then show up as one of the possible Post Processing Steps. You can do this with many programs, Sfex for example, or a Photoshop droplet.

Assuming you *don't* tick Minimise Metadata, the export would include all the metadata and be the adjusted image.
