Change side panel open/close mechanism

I find myself very often inadvertently closing the side panels while working in library and development. What happens is that I move the mouse over to scroll the side panel up or down and accidentally clicking on the outside bar, closing the panel. I'd like to see that open/close bar changed to an open/close button located at the top or bottom, or even in the middle and have rest of the side panel be my scroll bar for the panel.

Does anyone else run into this problem?

Yes, but what I'd like to see is that when I left click on the edge, getting ready to drag up or down, I'm in scroll mode. What happens with a left click is that the panel closes or opens. The scroll bar is quite narrow and I'm suggesting that it would be friendlier if it were larger, or if the close/open behavior on a left click did not work throughout the whole bar.

For example, I'm developing. I apply a curve adjustment and the only other thing I want to do is apply some luminance noise reduction. So, after the curve adjustment, I move the mouse a bit to the right and left click to grab the scroll bar, but I moved just a bit too far and my left click resulted in closing the develop panel.

Once I'd learned what the tab key does, I don't think I've ever used the far side panels to open or close the side panels except when I've closed one by accident.

I was struggling with that when Lightroom 1.' came out... I am now used to it and most of the time, I do not use the scroll bar at all but the mouse' scroll whell over the grid or PGUP/PGDN.

Ah, yes, the scroll wheel. Yes, that does work better. I think I had been avoiding that because when initially loading lightroom, I'd found the scroll wheel not responsive in the folder list. Seems to be the ticket, though from other applications I'm in the habit of using the scroll bar.

I'm reprogramming myself to use the scroll bar. The problem remains that these two functions, scrolling the panel with the panel's scroll bar and opening and closing it are both activated by left clicking right next to each other.

John, oh, I see what you meant, I read it backwards.

Brandon, yes, it's still annoying, but I find for me, that at least it's 'manually' annoying, rather than 'automatically' annoying. Takes an intentional click rather than just an accidental mouseover to pop it up.

True enough -- for me it's automatically annoying because I fully intend to click and drag. But my eyes are on the text in the panel and not fully engaged in aiming the mouse because I'm used to other programs where the scroll bar is a lot wider. I'm sure I'll have no problem as soon as I install the chip that reads my mind...

I can make this go a bit longer. Yes, I have the same problem all the time- but I felt it was part of the wonders of digital photography. I just converted to digital this year.

This feature is something that irritates me intensley and I have posted this several times. Just slightly bigger scroll bar or a delay to the fly out panels would help.

This gets me too. What about putting one or the other on the other side of the panel? I'd go for the show/hide function on the inside and the scroll bars on the outside. Have you posted in the feature request section of the Adobe site?

Nonetheless, it is a problem for those of us who use the scroll bars in other applications. We expect our mouse to grab it without having to focus the eyes over there, just using our peripheral vision to place it and click, then drag. Often the mouse pointer goes quite a bit away from the edge, but it works in every other application that uses side scroll bars.
