In edit >catalogue settings I have tried to set > When lightroom next exits ....but it always defaults to > Once a week when exiting lightroom. A known bug? TIA

Welcome to the forum!

Try setting it to "Every time Lightroom exits". That one should stick. The one you were trying to choose is a one-time-only request to slip in a backup that is out of the ordinary.
