Catalogue preview problem

Hi,

I'm currently going...slightly...mad trying to render 1:1 previews for my Lightroom catalogue.

I have my main library sat on an external HDD and the catalogue on my internal HDD. I have set Lightroom rendering the previews a number of times now (on around 34,''' images), and each time it has finished I've had it check to see if there are any previews still to be done only to find that it has saved around 5,''' (at best), of the previews to the catalogue despite running through the whole 34,''' images.

Is this usual; should I be attempting to create so many previews in one shot? Yes, I know the obvious answer but wondered if it was a limitation of Lightroom, my PC or the way I'm working?

I have had additional problems accessing standard previews when the main library (sat in the external HDD), is offline although I thought that they should have been a product of the initial import, particularly as the problem doesn't apply to the whole catalogue?

Anyone any ideas?

1:1 previews on 34''' images will be HUGE. Are you sure you want to do that? Standard previews I could see, but 1:1?

I was also having problems in that many of the shots in the library view didn't have standard sized previews attached after import and I decided to go the whole hog of 1:1 previews.

Chris, as Victoria stated "standard previews" ought to do what you want but first in the catalog settings make sure what your "standard" is, it is recommended to be bigger than your screen width (pixels).
Files missing previews from import is probably how you have set the import settings at the time. I know I had a few unusual results until I got my requirements and how to fulfill them sorted out.

Hi Geoff,

I have the standard preview set for 168' pixels and all photos were imported on the same settings (copied to new location from internal to external drive), which is why I couldn't understand why some were missing standard previews - in fact I'm still having problems and a number of files now have there thumbnail previews missing in addition to larger previews!

I am down to rendering 1:1 previews at a few hundred files at a time otherwise I have to keep repeating the rendering process as many of the previews are 'going missing'. I've not yet looked into the problem of the greyed out files in the library and am hoping that they reappear on booting up today.

I think you simply need to render standard previews.

Be aware that there is a default setting in Lightroom which is discarding 1:1 previews after 3' days! (From when a given one was created)

1:1 are for the photos you are actually working on. It is not meant to be there for a photo you did not look at since a long while...

This is a new install of Lightroom and I am setting up the catalogue for the first time for all of my photos, i.e., all are being installed at the same time to create my initial catalogue from where I can assign keywords and make assessments regarding the photos. For this purpose, 1:1 previews suit me, though I recognise that not everyone will want to work this way.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that some of the problems may be to do with system resources, as rendering a couple of hundred previews at a time seems to have a better hit rate, though I do have to keep rebooting to clear the system after a while otherwise I run into other problems (thumbnail previews disappearing from the library view, etc.).
