Catalogue Import/Export using Vista and XP

I have created a new catalogue on my laptop (XP) and want to use it on my desktop (Vista 64 bit). The exported catalogue was not accepted by the Vista desktop indicting that the catalogue can not be written to and is unusable.

What is the problem here? Can anyone direct me to procedures for using the XP Lightroom 2.5 catalogue on my Vista 64bit desktop?

What happened, exactly? Was there an error message? Was the problem in Lightroom, or was the problem in Vista? Reading your words, it seems like you are saying that Vista (not Lightroom) refused to recognize the file.

Can you clear this up?

Here is the message received by Lightroom when trying to open the exported catalog:

"Lightroom cannot use the catalog...because it is not writable and cannot be opened. This could be caused by incorrect permissons or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog."

No other Lightroom application is involved on my desktop (as far as I know). Is "permissions" the problem?

The original catalog is on a portable hard drive that has been swaped between the laptop and the desktop. The exported catalog was saved on the portable hard drive as well in a separate folder. The desktop Lightroom 2.5 64bit could not open either catalog.

It's likely a Vista permissions issue. However, one other easy thing to check; look in the folder where the *.lrcat Lr catalog file is located. With Lr closed, not running, see if there's a file named *.lrcat.lock. If so, delete it.

Thank you Brad. The "lock" file shows up each time I try to open the catalog. I have been able to delete the file but a new one always appears later when trying again to open the catalog. Any thoughts as to this "lock" issue or "permissions"? Sorry if this is beyond the scope of Lightroom per se.

Are you able to do anything with the problem drive, directly thru Vista? Copying or moving files to and fro? Generally, you access the disk permissions via the disk's properties dialog, altho' the process varies whether you have simple or advanced sharing enabled.

As another experiment, try creating new test catalogs on both the internal and external drives on the Vista system. Hold down (and keep holding) the Ctrl key, while starting Lr. That should bring up a dialog allowing you to open an alternate catalog, or to create a new one. See if that meets with any success

Thanks again Brad. I was able to adjust the permissions via the properties section. Now in the process of importing catalog information and negatives.
