"Catalogue Error - LR needs to be closed"

Hi again,
quite often I get the message "There was a problem reading the catalogue - LR has to be closed down" - in middle of a session - and then LR crashes. When restarting LR another pop-up message comes up: "When using LR the last time LR had to close unexpectedly due to a problem when reading the catalogue. LR needs to check the catalogue before you can proceed." What could be the problem here? My catalogue is on a SSD. Should I buy a new SSD as the current one might be failing?

Have you done an "Optimize Catalog" under File menu? Did it go okay?

You may be correct, if your SSD is failing you might have those errors. But you can check your drive in Windows, and more thoroughly with third party software. Do you have lots of room left on that SSD drive?

Hey Ken! I`ve just checked "optimize catalog" - says the last time I`ve done that was yesterday (must happen automatically cause I haven`t done anything of that sort knowingly). Checking the drive in windows it seems fine and it`s not older than about a year... I SHOULD have just that catalogue on that drive nothing else and it`s a 500 GB drive - HOWEVER, when I just checked in the file manager what`s actually on it I found that there are quite A FEW LR files - possible old outdated catalogues? - on it instead of just the one file of the catalogue (maybe I should delete them?) . In total 170 GB are taken.

DOn’t delete them until you are sure that are not important. Instead move them to another drive. Not only will you have a master catalog file (*.lrcat) in the Lightroom Folder, you will also have Previews folder and a Smart Previews folder. Also possibly the Backup folder is housed there with many backup catalogs. The Backup folder should be located permanently on another volume. When you primary volume fails (and it will) the master catalog file along with all the Backup catalog files will be lost if the Backuop folder remains on the same volume.

Well, I have to agree with Cletus. But funny thing is, I also had a lock up a few days ago. (Trying out Windows 11 still) After my lockup and forcing LrC down. I did a couple of reboots, and still had troubles. So I checked my Windows\Temp Folder and found a bunch of LR-* files as well. My first time encountering these ever. Lucky first time,,,, I 'm not sure. I've been using LR since Version 3. But after checking on LrC and all was okay, I deleted these 50 thousand files. Crazy.

Btw Nadine, like Cletus mentioned - below the Lightroom folder there are a few other folders. One or two with Preview files. These are different than what I had in my TEMP folder, which must have been debris from one of my LrC lockups in Windows 11. (I am back to Windows 10 again) For some reason I have a bit of a problem with IO lockups in Win11. But those many "LR files" you speak of could very much be normal. Try deleting your Previews within LrC settings and empty your Recyling bin. see if there is much more room.
