Hi

I posted a thread yesterday in the Equipment Talk section about getting a new pc end of this month.

I regularly backup all my files (My Documents....) into a NAS drive, meaning the backup filing structure in my NAS drive is the same as on my PC.

With my imminent PC end of this month, I can re-istall LR etc but what do i do with my current catalogue (I am positive it's in LR default location as I've not made any changes at install)?

I will continue with the same filing structure in my 'My documents' folder so can I restore the filing structure and backed up files in the NAS to the new pc's hardrive and work on LR as I was in the old PC?

If I understand the intent of the ? Pat, just network the two machines and copy the Lr stuff from the old to the new. (You say you're using a NAS now, so I'm assuming you have the network infrastructure in place already)

You'll need the catalog(s) of course, and the orginal image files in their existing folder tree arrangement.

Also give some thought to copying over your presets, templates and preferences. I assume you're XP now, moving to Vista? We can tell you where all these files are located.

Hi Brad

Yes, I do have the network infrastructure in place (whole house).

I intend to give my old PC to my youngest daughter and still leave all existing files and file structure in place in the old PC.

Mmmhh...I totally forgot about my network infrastructure! I can then copy the 'My Documents' folder and all subfolders and contents from the old PC to the 'My Documents' new PC folder, correct?

I will continue to use XP as I'm still not too convinced about Vista. How do I copy across my existing presets, templates, preferences and catalogues?

Pat, on XP, find all that stuff under

sysdrive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\ ....

there's a bunch of subfolders, whose purpose will be obvious.... Just copy over what you need, probably all of it.

I've got XP Home and I can't find the 'username' folder under Documents and Settings. All I see under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users or Users....

Found it, I think from LR's catalog settings Information section

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My document\My Pictures\Lightroom. In this Lightroom folder, I see a whole bunch of folders and files. I don't see presets though...

I may be wrong, but I think you're still looking at the wrong folder. The . . .\My Pictures\Lightroom folder normally holds the catalog, backups, and previews, but not any presets or other settings.

Go back to sysdrive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\ .... 'username' in this path represents your username, not the word 'username'. Look under each user name that youi find there until you find the one that has the rest of the path. Inside the Lightroom folder you'll find a set of about 17 folders of presets, templates, settings, etc. Those folders are the ones you're looking for. Good luck,

Application Data is probably a hidden folder Bruce. Do you have hidden folders and files set to show?

As many times, as I've typed that, I can't believe I left it out here, thanks VB.

Patrick & Bruce, FYI, if needed, you get to that setting via Control Panel (classic view), Folder Options, View tab, about 8 items down, enable the radio button on 'Show hidden files/folders'

And backup backup backup

Got the new pc last night but will only get the chance to set it up possibly on Sunday. I also need to do some prep work. I need to ensure too my NAS pointing to the new pc from the old pc since I use this to do full backups. I suppose I jsut need to map the NAS drive and disable to old map?

Just an update on the new pc.

Fired it up yesterday, copied my entire My documets tree from my old pc to my new pc, double clcked on the catalog file and wallha!! Everything was there :icon_biggrin: I even copied across the preference, presets files etc.

What I did noticed thought is that I have 2 preference files in the Preference folder. I looked at my old PC and there were 2 files. How come 2 files? Did I stuff up sometime ago?

What I did noticed also was some of my images which already had PP done in LR on my old PC di not have any PP at all in te new PC. That's weird. Not many but a few. How can this happen? I though all of those pp changes were recorded in the library file?
