I have heard of people using a different catalogs for each photo cession. I've tried this but then I have to look through different catalogs to find images when I'm trying to update our website. Is using different catalogs a common practice or not and if so what is the advantages?

It seem you already discovered the big disadvantages of multiple catalogs! It really seem not working in your case. The rule is to use multiple catalogs ONLY if the images they contain have absolutely no relation to each other.

For example, many wedding photographers create a different catalog for each wedding. Here we can understand as it is unlikely that a couple will order photos from another wedding than theirs...

Another example is if you work for a press agency. In this case, you may want to have a catalog for your work and a different one for family or personnal images.

But even if I do some weddings now and then, I put everything in a single catalog. This way, I can easily add to my collection of "Childrens at weddings". That said, I don't mix weddings in same folders as you may guess!
