catalog size

Hi there,

Still trying to understand this , but how big should I let my catalog be ,
I mean what ways are there to arrange a catalog ?
Can I make a catalog per photoshoot folder, or should I make a general
catalog, let's say for the year 2''8 ? or quarterly , I don't really know how to use this..

Since LR cannot search across catalogs, I would suggest not creating too many of them, otherwise you loose the ability to effectively search and organize. Now, if you were talking in the high tens of thousands of images, that might present some challenges to a single LR catalog. For example, I am presently using three catalogs (work, personal and my volunteer work), but that is because they are discrete bodies of work with different needs. For a good primer, you might want to read "The DAM Book" by Peter Krogh. This may give you the basics on DAM (Digital Asset Management). Scott Kelby's book is also useful if you are just starting out with LR, if you can put up with his "unique" style of humor.

I've seen several/many users here say, they keep several smaller catalogs for active work, which all end up imported into a single master catalog used principally for searching/retrieval.

I'm sure I've seen references to 1''k+ images in some these masters.

That's where I'm trying to get to; working on small bites currently.

Yep, quite right, my main reference catalog is currently running at around 15'k, but eugh, is it slow! Fine for searching though. Other than that, optimum catalog size depends on your machine specs - about 2'k is the most my working catalogs currently stretch to.

I create personal catalogs for each year as well as catalogs for either specific clients or types of work. Some files are in multiple catalogs.
1'k seem to be the sticky point for my modest system.
This seems to work ok for me.
