Catalog import and metadata

I've just returned from my stay in Australia and I'm trying to import the LR catalogs I have on my laptop into my main catalog. The import itself is not a problem but all imported images have the "metadata changed externally" icon displayed.

Is this correct? And if so, should I force the metadata from the database onto the files or vice versa?

The main catalog will see that the files have been changed (in the catalog the came from) so will have that display.
Did you save all the changes in the smaller catalogs? Cmd-s or autowrite.
If so you can just read the metadata in the main catalog. If not try on one file and see what the result is.
You may need to go back to the small catalogs and save, then reimport to the main one.

The files are read from a backup so that could explain why LR thinks the files are changed.

I have updated the metadata using the LR database and haven't found any problems or missing metadata yet.
