In a synchronicity of events - me trying to stop all this synchronization with LR mobile (because I don't understand it) and the apparent collapse of an external hard drive - my folders seem to be empty irrespective of files showing in subfolders.
After recovering the files I moved most of them to a new external hard drive but the problem persists.
I tried synchronizing the folders but this did not change a thing.
Please help. Any hint would be highly appreciated!

Thank you so much Johan!!! I should have asked before - instead of spending hours and hours trying to find and sort the problem by trying different back-ups and synchronizing - you made my day

Also for the future, Your Lightroom version can no be v14.2 if your Operating system is iOS (iPhone OS). V14.x is Lightroom Classic which only runs on WindowsOS or MacOS
