Okay. Just upgraded to OSX Catalina 10.15.5. Tried to crop an existing DNG file but when I adjusted the control handles for the crop rectangle the image disappeared and the message 'no image selected' was shown. Using Ctrl-Z I stepped back and the original image reappeared. I tried it with several images and it was repeatable. In effect I can no longer crop images. Can somebody try to replicate pls?

You may have a Library filter set accidentally. Make sure the menu item File > Library Filters > Enable Filters is unchecked. (And see that menu for the keyboard shortcut.)

It took a bit of watching the video many times at slow speed to see what's going on. (If only more people posted screen recordings!) The clue was that after you cropped, the photo disappeared from the filmstrip. I kept thinking that was because of filters, but then I noticed that you had a smart collection "Medium between 5 and 10MP" selected as the source:

I'm assuming that's defined with this criterion:

When you adjust the crop handles, the cropped photo's megapixels drop below 5, it no longer matches the smart-collection criterion and gets dropped from it (and the filmstrip), and there is no photo selected any more.

The workaround is to select the photo you want to crop, go to All Photographs, then Develop, then crop.

A number of people have complained about this "feature" of smart collections over the years:

But that this point in LR Classic's remaining lifetime, I doubt it will ever change.

You Sir, are a marvel. I cannot believe I didn't see it...doh! Many thanks indeed :) I actually like smart collections but clearly missed this wrinkle.

Not a wrinkle but a rule. Images that meet the criteria are included in the Smart Collection. When I work with settings that will include or exclude images in a Smart Collections, I first copy the existing contents of the smart collections to a static collection and work in the static collection.
