captions keywords

I am new to LR (today) It looks like LR is setup real well on the right side of the screen for keywords. How do you get the keyword to show up in the 'Grid' or 'loupe' views when the only option is 'caption'? (on the thumbnails in the center of the screen) And is it possible to have the keyword/caption visible on the thumbs at the bottom. Am I missing something?

Forrest, welcome to the Forums. No, you're not missing anything, you can't do it. The only place they'll show up is in the keyword panel on the RHPs.

I used to wish for that capability as well, but I guess I've just gotten used to it not being available. If you feel strongly, we provide a link to the offical Adobe Feature Request on the NavBar at the top of the thread.

You can display the keywords with the image in the Slideshow module, by adding a Custom Text field with the keyword token.

BTW, the thumbs at the bottom are called the 'Filmstrip'. You can configure them so that a 'keywords have been applied' badge/icon is diplayed there.

OK Thank You. I am a horse event photographer where every photo may be a different person/horse/entry # and then my wife attaches the entry # as a keyword to the photo so she can drag/drop and sort them into their respective directory's. But the keyword needs to be visible on each photo like the file name or 3' other options can be. I notice that caption would be visible but then its a LOT harder to input hundreds of the same # over and over. And I can't mark them by color as most events have 1''-4'' entry #'s as I don't categorize by good-bad-ugly they are all good with maybe 2' bad per 1''' shots. I would very much like to figure out a way to use LR - I will send a note to the feature request

Does the entry number need to be a keyword, or could it be in Copy Name, Caption, or Title?

If it's one of those fields, then it can be displayed in the grid. Just bring up one of the grid views that shows the filename or other metadata (press J to cycle through the views), then right-click on one of the bits of metadata and choose the field you want to display. (Keywords isn't one of them.)

Similarly, I photograph football. For some well known players I may use their names but when I put the numbers of the players in an image (like your entry #) I can just setup a smart collection for a given number and it will automatically add all the images having that number in the keywords. No need to manually put or move into specific physical folders! It is then easy to find all photos of player #69 and if I do not want all the 69 from all teams, I can add the team condition to the smart collection. In your case, as the entry # may be the same for different person/horse at different events, in your smart collection, you can limit by date or event name if it was also keyworded.

Wow. A lot of info. Keyword seems (to me) to be the fastest way to input a different entry # to each photo as it has several options for inputting as a keyword already in LR.
Will check out smart collection - sounds pretty good. Entry #'s change for each show (week) so even the same person will have many different entry #'s over the years. But I separate each show by name of show/date so they just let us what show they wish to view. (After the show is over we get a list of names with their entry # from the show officials and add the name and entry # together before uploading to my website-as later they cannot remember what entry # they had at what show)

You could also check out LR/Transporter http://www.timothyarmes.com/lrtransporter.php which will allow you to pull data from CSV list files and automatically add that to image numbers, or transfer data from one field to another (i.e. keyword to caption).

This is the way to go!
Names + Event = What they want to see.
Or: Names + Season (From Date to Date).

You can go further by selecting all photos where an horse appear and tag them with the keyword "Horse". Then asking for photos containing
Name + !Horse
you will get all of their photos when they receive their prizes on stage or at lunch or simply, without their horses beside.
