Can't View Imported Photos

I Am New To Adobe Lightroom 2.o. Tried Importing Photos From My Computer Directories And Dslr Camera Via Usb Cable But After The Import The Photos Are Displayed Only As Grey Rectagular Frames. This Is True In Library, Develop, Slideshow And Print Modes But Can View Photos In Web Mode Only. Do I Need To Change Some Settings To Adobe Lightroom 2 Before Viewing Any Images? Can't Find Any Answers From Several Lightroom Books. Please Help! Thanks!

To start with though......
Did you render previews on import?
Seems a bit unusual so could you please take a minute to fill in your signature something like I have (in the userCP) so as we know what we are dealing with. Thanks
